Thank you for taking the time to look through this website and learn about Kewanee. . .“A City of Choice.”
Kewanee is my hometown, and it’s a great place to live, work, play, worship and learn. If you’re reading this publication here in Kewanee, I invite you to tour our city and see firsthand all of the things that make this such a fine Midwestern community. If you’ve never been to Kewanee, I’d like to invite you to visit, and see for yourself.
One of Kewanee’s greatest attributes is that it offers a high quality of life at low cost. We have affordable, quality housing for people of all ages and needs, with business-friendly local, county and state governments. Two new subdivisions offer lowcost building lots in scenic surroundings.
Kewanee’s is an ideal location, situated less than an hour’s drive from metropolitan areas with nearly half a million in population. We’re an even shorter drive from Interstate 80 and Interstate 74, giving us links with the entire nation.
Kewanee also is served by two Amtrak trains which carry passengers to and from Chicago.
Community services include a fine, modern new hospital, as well as health clinics and physicians, dentists and specialists who practice here regularly.
Our educational system features two public school districts serving youth from prekindergarten through high school, and a Catholic school with classes through eighth grade. And Black Hawk College, a community college based in Moline, has a campus just outside Kewanee that’s nationally renowned for its agriculture and equine programs and offers University Parallel programs for students looking to go on to a four-year degree.
Our park district is one of the finest in the state, operating four picturesque parks that feature an 18-hole public golf course and driving range, a Family Aquatic Center, a large lagoon for fishing and other programs and services.
Shopping is available both in our Downtown and our Southtown retail districts. Kewanee historically has been a retail center serving not only our residents, but people from towns within a radius of 25 miles.
Business and industry will find a warm welcome in Kewanee. The Kewanee Economic Development Corp. is developing two large industrial sites that can handle a wide variety of business needs.
We also have a capable and dedicated workforce, and the city can offer such business incentives as tax increment financing, our Enterprise Zone and a low-interest loan program.
Kewanee’s city government boasts a 24-hour police force and fire department which benefit from modern equipment and the best training. There are also emergency and transfer ambulance systems, assuring that no Kewaneean is ever more than a few minutes away from needed medical care.
Our City Council for years has been dedicated to improving the city’s infrastructure. Two reverse-osmosis treatment plants ensure that Kewanee has a large supply of pure drinking water, and there are ongoing programs for maintaining and rebuilding streets, water lines and sewers.
These quality city services boost the quality of life, and add to the quality of the business climate in Kewanee.
I hope you enjoy this introduction to our city, and hope you’ll have an enjoyable visit here.
